Is your small bathroom in desperate need of a makeover but your wallet is feeling a little light? Fear not! Upgrading your bathroom doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With a sprinkle of creativity and some clever hacks, you can turn your petite space into a stylish retreat without breaking the bank.
From choosing light colors that open up the room to finding clever storage solutions, we’ve got the perfect budget-friendly tips to help you maximize both style and function.Let’s dive into some delightful ideas that will refresh your bathroom while keeping your budget intact!
Utilize light and bright colors! From the walls to the floor, using a lighter color scheme will give the illusion of a larger space. A lighter tone of blue or green would be a great choice.
BUDGET HACK: Use an accent wall OR look for mistinted paint.
To cut down on the spending, as paint can get pricey, you can choose to do an accent wall to freshen up the walls of your bathroom instead of painting the entire room. People typically choose to add the accent wall to the wall they want emphasized the most, such as the wall where the mirror is mounted on.
Another way to save money if you definitely want to paint the whole bathroom is by using mistinted paint! This is paint that either has been returned OR paint that was not correctly mixed by store employees. Go to your local large hardware store and ask if they have any for sale. (Sometimes they even refer to it as “oops paint” instead).
Storage, storage, and more storage. One of the most simple yet effective ways to maximize the small space you have in your bathroom is storage! Whether that be installing floating shelves or on the walls or buying a vertical ladder storage piece that goes nicely above the toilet, organized storage is a must!
BUDGET HACK: Acrylic shelves are both very easy to install and easy on the wallet.
Acrylic shelves can be easily found on almost any budget website, most notably Amazon. They are typically renter-friendly as well, if you don’t have the luxury of putting holes in walls. It’s also a cute way to show off your skincare routine or your perfumes.
Refresh your faucets and fixtures! A quick fix to update your bathroom is to change out your fixtures, such as your faucet, toilet paper holder, and even your toilet handle. Black matte or gold fixtures are popular choices that add subtle hints of warmth and luxury. Don’t underestimate just how much you can enhance your bathroom with this small trick.
BUDGET HACK: Instead of buying completely new fixtures, buy spray paint!
Spray painting your fixtures may seem silly, but it’s actually a perfectly safe alternative if you don’t want to spend money on buying brand new ones. In fact, more people are leaning towards spray painting their fixtures when it comes down to it because it’s such an easy DIY hack!
Add some greenery! There are multiple ways to bring life into your bathroom and adding plants is one of my favorites! You can choose to go the real plant route by adding eucalyptus in your shower, a huge favorite, that doubles as decor and a natural relaxant – just what you want while you’re detoxing the day away in your shower. You can also choose smaller potted plants, fake or real, and add those to either your shelves or near the sink for the perfect small decor piece.
BUDGET HACK: Repurpose plants in reusable jars!
You do not need expensive plants in marble vases to elevate your bathroom’s look! Honestly, you can even take pieces of other plants that you have from other parts of your home and repurpose them in the bathroom with a glass jar that you may not use anymore. My favorite to use are mason jars for that cutesy, rustic look.
Lighting is key. When it comes to lighting, even small changes can be impactful. Swapping out older fixtures for newer, more modern ones can give your bathroom a whole new look.
BUDGET HACK: Use LED lighting strips!
A cheaper way to improve your bathroom is using LED strips, which not only emits a cleaner, brighter light, but also serves as a stylish way to make the room more inviting. You can choose your favorite spot to install the LED lighting, but a few popular spots include either under the cabinets, around the main mirror, or lining any shelving that you may already have.
Have fun with art! Adding or hanging art in your bathroom can be an easy way to upgrade your bathroom. From utilizing cute, inspirational signs you can find at your local homegoods store or framing a minimalist piece of art you can find online, there are endless ways to decorate your space in a fun way that’s unique to you. Also, keep in mind that whatever art you add will be exposed to moisture on a daily basis.
BUDGET HACK: DIY your art!
Adding art to your bathroom doesn’t have to break the bank. Find your creative side by DIY-ing some art pieces and even just framing your own pictures. A popular idea is to go with a theme – whether it be beachy or florals, or animal prints, pick whatever vibe speaks to you. What screams inviting to you – or more so, what do you want to look at when either starting your morning or winding down after a long day.
Experiment with different bathroom tiles! Switching out your bland, boring tiles for something more fun and exciting can definitely bring life into your bathroom decor. There’s a great variety of tiles out there to choose from, which can suit whatever color scheme or overall vibe that you’re going for.
BUDGET HACK: Use peel and stick tiles!
Another way to cut your budget in half is to try out budget- and renter-friendly peel and stick tiles. You can use these tiles either on the walls or on the floor, depending on which part of your bathroom you want to use as a focal point. These are typically very easy to install and give your space an instant upgrade!
Light a candle! If LED lighting is not your vibe, then incorporate some candles. When decorating a small bathroom, it’s important to focus on small items that will multitask for you, such as candles. They can create a warm and inviting atmosphere as well as making your bathroom smell amazing.
BUDGET HACK: Wait for yearly candle sales and stock up!
We don’t all need the incredibly, although beautiful, expensive candles from Anthropologie to upgrade our bathrooms. Wait for the yearly candle sales that certain stores have throughout the year and stock up! Bath & Body Works is known for theirs, but also retail giants such as Target and Walmart have great deals as well.
Find a rug! Rugs are a great addition to any bathroom. Not only do they add a sense of warmth to your space, but they also make a comfy and warm addition for your feet, especially in those colder months. This is another way that you can add your own personal style in, from maybe adding a pop of color or finding something that matches your current theme.
BUDGET HACK: Check for rug scraps!
Granted, “scraps” is not the most aesthetic term that you would want to use for decor, but your wallet will thank you! Call or go to your local large hardware store and ask for rug scraps in the size that you need. These are typically much more affordable than your typical rugs.
Pick a color scheme! Choosing a color scheme and sticking with it is one of the most simple ways to upgrade your bathroom. Combining colors that enhance your space can make it seem perfectly curated, almost like a professional did it!
BUDGET HACK: No need for a pro, just Google color palettes!
Use man’s (new) best friend, Google, to perfectly curate a color scheme for your upgraded bathroom. Popular ones are neutrals, shades of gray, and shades of blue. Pick the one that suits you and your unique style the best!
